How to Make Lip Balm At Home

Learning how to make lip balm at home is incredibly easy and rewarding. Personally, I go through a lot of lip balm, so being able to make my own, all natural, non-toxic lip balm is a huge win. It’s also a great gift for friends, family, and co-workers during the holidays. You can create your own labels and really personalize them to make your gift stand out!

If you’d like to skip learning to make lip balm at home and would rather purchase my non-toxic, small-batch, vegan lip balm, head over to my Etsy store!

The full list of materials you will need is:

  • Lip Balm Tubes or Containers
  • Shae Butter
  • Coconut Oil
  • Beeswax or Candelilla wax
  • Essential Oil
  • Wide Mouth Mason Jar
  • Small Pot

Step 1: Choose Your Containers

You can literally make lip balm with any type of container you’d like. You can use old tubes, small jars you already have, or you can purchase new ones. Below are a few of the lip balm containers I have used and like.

Milliard Lip Balm Crafting Tube Refills -BPA Free- 100 Pack – White

These are my favorite. The caps work great and the tubes are easy to fill. Super similar to any tube you are already used to.

Empty Slide Top Tin Containers for Lip Balm, Crafts, Storage Kit – .25oz, 6 Pack

This is a totally different type of lip balm container, but super unique a fun. I have used these before and liked them quite a bit.

Step 2: Determine Materials

Next up on your to do list is choosing what type of materials you would like to use. Do you want your lip balms to be vegan or is using beeswax okay? Are you interested in all natural, organic materials, or is going cheaper a better option?

If you are looking for high-end, all natural options, I highly suggest using materials from Bulk Apothecary.

If you want something quick and slightly cheaper, you can use the following links to find materials:

Lastly, for your flavors, I recommend using therapeutic grade essential oils, such as those from Young Living.

Step 3: Making Your Lip Balms

Now that you have all of your materials, you can get started! Put a cutting board on your counter to protect the surface from spills and heat. Grab your mason jar and measuring spoon. Scoop the following ratios into your mason jar: 1 TBSP of Coconut Oil, 1 TBSP Shae Butter, and 1.25 TBSP Wax. Place water in the pot, then place the mason jar full of your materials into the pot with water, begin to heat up the water. After a few minutes, your mixture will begin to become clear, grab a wooden skewer and start mixing!

Once your mixture is completely translucent and melted, remove from heat. Put 10-15 drops of your chosen essential oil into the mixture and stir for 90 seconds. After you’re done stirring, immediately pour the liquid into your lip balm containers. This mixture will begin to harden very quickly, you should pour immediately!

Now, just wait a few hours and you will have brand new lip balm that you made yourself!
